Tire storage issues 700 1989

Hi all,
I am still looking at some Blizzak snow tires for the 89 745t. Well, i looked at them, only one season of use. They are on non-volvo steel rims and the owner wants them out of his garage, a good deal at $150. My concern is that he has had them stored on their side, stacked 4 high for 3 years. I had read somewhere that this is not the way to store tires. What happens to them? Should I pass based on this? Thanks,
