strange clicking sound with power loss... help please 700

I have not been on the board for a year. That is very good news in that after fixing the hundred problems inherent in an '89 740GL, 8 valve, 135K and neglected for who knows how long.. I have had a year of trouble free service from her...

Till now.. Coming up the mountain today I suddenly hear a mechanical sound that is louder and faster with more throttle also causing power loss. In fact I could not make it up my long and steep driveway... Sounds like a loud ticking but nothing prior - it happened very suddenly...

Don't really notice it at idle but it gets louder and louder with throttle and the car feels like it lost half its power...
No signs of overheating or anything else obvious.

I doubt it but could it be a failed universal joint?
Any suggestions greatly appreciated!
