seat belt jam for 740 700

I recently picked up two nice leather seats at a salvage yard to replace worn seats in my 1991 740 wagon. In the course of making the replacement, I let the seatbelt go and it drew in tight to the housing and locked up. Is there any easy way to release it to allow for reinstallation? I opened up the spring side which has a couple of torx-head screws, but that didn't seem to allow for release. The other side of the housing has a cover with plastic fasteners and appears to be difficult to open. There's a hole on that side that looks like it could be a release, but probing it with wire hasn't yielded results. Thanks for any ideas.
