Car doesn't start...tried the regular novice things..... 200

I have a 1991 240 (it rained very hard earlier in the day, if it had anything to do with it but I don't think so..) The car was running regular and fine. I stopped and turned off the engine and was sitting at the curb. When i went to start her up, she had absolutly no spark, just the lights came on the dash..you could see the battery was o.k. lights on and everything. I checked the fuses, full pump etc. everything fine nothing there. No crank of the engine..zip.... just would not turn over. The next thing I tried was moving the gear selector from park to nuetral and tried to turn her on...nothing..played with gear selector but still nothing. Then I thought relays, but could not figure which and what??....then, I thought about the starter and ignition. So, I wiggled the key in the ignition and whallah!! it turned on...Do you think it's the starter, starter solinoid or ignition switch and what kind of tests do I do to eliminate?? thanks so much for any input...maybe I'm wrong unless you have any other though what the problem was. thanks, Lynn
