Brake light 200 1989

I drove my new 240 from Southern California to Ft. Collins, CO. That little engine is just not designed to pull that car over those hills. I had to open the door and push with my foot to make it. Before I left I removed the "Service" bulb in the instrument cluster, I also took out the "Bulb Failure" bulb. The brake lights do not work. All other lights in the back work including the brake lights when you turn on the fog light switch. Did removing the bulb do this or is this more likly a Bulb Failure Relay problem.
