This question is actually about an '86 740, but I posted it on the 700 board and didn't get much response. I know there is a lot more M46 experience here. Especially with clutch cables since since most manual 700s were turbos and a hydraulic clutch. Unfortunately, the FAQ has little on clutch cables either, so thanks for any advice you can give.
Bought car recently with no history and 230K miles and an M46 tranny. Clutch cable broke while shifting. I was able to drive the car sans clutch to get it home. I'm suspecting the problem may be more than a worn out cable.
When I get underneath the car, I found that the "fork" where the cable would attach would not move more than about 1/8 inch even when I pried it with a bar. Then I fiddled with it and suddenly it would move freely with no resistance. It would even move from side to side. Can anyone tell me what that fork feels like normally. I'm thinking the tranny needs to come apart, since I would expect that fork to only forward and back, and with significant resistance. And diagnostics you can suggest.
