WD 40 Question

Have a problem with my BMW door sqeaking-I'm spraying wd40 on a paper towel and then applying to the weather strip around the door frame and it's been quiet for over a month. I'm also using this on my old 960, my son's driving to help keep the sunroof from leaking. He's seeing me do this and says not too use the stuff , that it's a petro by product and will eat the rubber seals away.
I say it won't -he says it will----now it's on---16 year old won't listen
---middle age Father's won't either--Who's right?
please respond ,those who are in the know--Before I pull a Homer Simpson on him.
I'm just trying to get my humble opinion across to him.
