Stumbled briefly then died 200

I have an 89 240DL wagon with almost 204k miles. Manual transmission. I was driving hom from work today when the engine stumbled briefly then abruptly died. No warning lights of any kind came on. It's been running fine, and it has a fresh battery and repaired alternator from October. When I tried to restart it, the engine turns over but it's making a different whining kind of sound as it turns over. I had it towed to my regular Volvo expert, but he won't be able to get to it until next week, and my curiosity/concern is getting to me. Has this happened to anyone out there in brickland? Any thoughts/ideas?
