What's the deal with timing? 120-130

Of course I've been playing on this Board for years now and own my fifth (who's counting) 122.
And I do my best not to name names, but when I recently posted a question about having the timing on my B20 high compression engine set at 20 BTDC a couple of very knowledgable folks said, and I paraphrase here, perfect.
Then when I read other posts people talk a lot about 10 BTDC as being a good place to be.
And a popular online magazine says after one rebuilds a B18 or B20 engine then 15 BTDC is the place for the timing to be set.
So what's the deal with timing?
And could someone explain how timing set "wrong" is related to an engine overheating?
Thanks for setting me straight on this, once and for all.
