diesel sound 900 1997

Hello to all,
'97 960, 119,000 miles. I know about the "Italian tune up" done it..worked. I know about synthetic switch.. done it, eliminated valve clatter on start up. I know about synthetic switch ATF..done it shifts beautifully. My problem is I have been driving this for a couple days now after lots of tinkering(tranny pan gasket replacement, shift control rod bushing). It has never run better(owned since 97K). However this morning I started it and there was no valve noise but there was this diesel sounding stuff coming from engine and it didn't change with throttle up or down while in park. Haven't driven it since I heard this noise. Any ideas? Timing belt changed at 66K. Does Idler pulley make this noise?

Thanks.
