Overheating or?? 200

Today on my trip back to school (160 mi) my ' 91 240 wagon's temp gauge worked its way up towards the orange zone. The car wasn't running badly or acting like it was overheating. I stopped and checked for leaks, but found nothing. The waterpump is fairly new. Not sure about the thermostat or radiator. Do these years have the temp compensator board like the older models?

The car ran very cool the rest of the way here. Is there a quick way to test the gauge? The check engine light also came on earlier today. Will read the codes tomorrow and post back.

Thanks in advance.
Dave
