Speedometer issue

Hello,

I've spent 3 days working on my 1984 244DL. Among the changes, I replaced the large clock in the cluster with a tachometer. Tach is working fine but after replacing everything and the first time I drove I found a problem with the speedometer.

As the speed of the car goes up the speedometer screeches like crazy, getting louder as the speed goes up. While it does that, the needle goes crazy and will jump to 100 when I'm going 30. Sometimes, at slow speed, or after taking a slow turn, it might stop its noise and the needle will work correctly again but that won't last long.

Any opinion as to what it is? The speed needle used to show a weird behavior before I touched anything and would usually just tend to bounce a little, but things were working fine otherwise.

What could this be? Cable plugged back the wrong way? (I haven't had the time to play with it to find out), speedometer that went toast at the wrong time to make me believe I did this? Cable just went bad? If something broke, would those symptoms come from a bad cable or a bad speedo?

Thanks for any info.
