92 960 alternator/regulater replacement question. 900

I have a 92 960 (172K) with an alternator light that
intermittanly comes on and off. I am assuming the BOSCH alternator is
on its way out.. I checked with FCP Groton and they have a
rebuilt unit for $200 + OR a voltage regulater for 100+.
The alternator lookd hsrd to remove. I checked the FAX
and there is not much there about this job.

My question is

Should I try to just replace the removable regulater in the car.
OR remove and replace the entire alternator.
ALSO , If have to remove the alternator, does the power steering pump
need to come out for easier acess.
wish it was a 940 !!!!!!!
