Update on New Seals / Timing Belt 200

Today, I replaced the main seal again, more carefully, and redid the timing, with the oversight of a friend who is car-competent. The timing worked this time around, so I now know how to set the timing (i.e. which notches/marks to set by, how to tell, turn the crankshaft twice, etc.)

The seal however, didn't seal, and proceeded to leak oil. This leads me to 2 conclusions:

1) Maybe I should check the whole flame trap apparatus. The flame trap itself is clean - not cleanish, but CLEAN. So maybe there's a problem further down? I have the Haynes and Bentley, so I'll look at those. Any other thoughts or gotchas in checking that system? Should I plan on replacing the hoses, etc.? Should I, as I have read some do, take out the flame trap altogether?

2) I don't see how I can get the seal in without the tool, unless someone has a reasonable alternative. I buctchered the first one, and the second one looked OK, but I couldn't get it flush with the aluminum casting using a rubber mallet and piece of wood to tap it in. I live in an apt. with no workbench, garage, etc., so fabbing one out of parts from the hardware store is essentially more painful than paying for the Volvo tool, and probably just as expensive in the long run (since I could be working during that time.)

Has anyone used a large sized socket to do the job? Do any car parts stores/catalogs offer generic seal presses of various sizes (i.e. JC Whitney)? Does anyone sell the Volvo seal tool (I called Cust. Srvc. at FCP Groton last time - the rep. told me they did not sell that tool.).

Gentlemen, your thoughts please...
And - A hefty thank you to everyone who's helped. Even doing this three or four times, its still MUCH cheaper than paying someone, and I learned how to set the timing on my car. THANK YOU ALL!

Best,

Lanval

FYI, for those of you feeling frosty, and wondering how I'm working on my car w/o a garage - I live in Orange County, CA a few miles from the beach, so it was pretty mild today. Hope everyone is safe, warm and fed.
