Sedan taillight leak into trunk 700 1990

Other people must have this problem...

Water makes it past the tail light seal at the middle top nut connection to the frame. It's actually designed to let water from the channels around the trunk lid to flow down onto the top of the plastic of the light and be directed to the side. Since the seal is not so great water is not directed to the side and instead flows down the inside of the car.

Should I apply caulk to the body and then put the taillight on and tighten it down. Would this solve the problem? Unfortunately I don't have a caulk gun, but similar alternatives?

I already put some silicone glue between the rubber seal and the plastic rim of the light assembly. I haven't done anything for between the rubber seal and the body. I'm afraid water will still get in through that bolt unless I fill it with caulk or some other substance. Is this true?

What do you all do for this?

Thanks,
Nathan
