OBD-II scanner or software S90-V90

I've got on on loan from AutuZone and read thec ode this morning.
It is one of the more advanced scanners, that also give a code explanation on the screen It said:
P0422 - EVAP system leak (minor).

There was also a free trial offer in the scanner's manual for one of the Web places, that provide code explanations and a troubleshooting chart for a fee, so I went there, and entered the code - it gave me a fairly vague diagnostics about the catalyst oxygen capacity.

Question - which one is to trust?
The fault explanation message on the scanner screen sounded quite specific, I wonder if there is any chance for it to come from the vehicle's ECU? This would make getting one of those scanners worth the price difference, OTOH, if it just comes from some lookup table in the scanner's brain - I'd go for the generic scanner, and Volvo manuals.
