A cautionary tale...
a few weeks ago, someone on the brickboard recommended using loctite red on carburettor throttle plate screws to avoid losing one to vibration and dropping it into your intake/valve/cylinder wall and ruining your nice motor.
While that's certainly something to be concerned about, I STRONGLY advise you to find some other way to secure those screws (using the proper split screws comes to mind)...
Due to vibration and run-on I was concerned about this problem with my HIF6s, so I followed the loctite advice a week or two ago.
However, since some small degree of my carb issues come from those vented throttle plates, I decided to remove my plates to either replace them or to solder over the holes. Well...
Loctite red is good stuff... a little too good. I managed to twist off my screws and had to drill them out to get to my plates. One of my throttle shafts took some serious damage in the process, because one of my original screws was steel and NOT brass... So the drill bit skated and went into the soft brass shaft. This also cost me two of my very small drill bits... Bummer.
I finally got the whole thing apart, and *maybe* I can salvage my damaged throttleshaft, but I STRONGLY advise ALL of you to never, ever, ever put a thread-locker on the throttle plate screws, unless you know for sure that you'll never want to remove those plates again...
I'm sure it's fine on the air filter bolts where you can use a good socket to break it loose, but brass (and steel) screws are entirely too soft for this sort of treatment.
Just my two (very costly) cents...
