Resolution (I hope): intermittent hesitation and bad idle, code 113 on socket 2 200 1992

Hello All:

Just a quick report back on the problems I have been having since last Monday with my '92 245, which initially wouldn't idle and would only run at a maximum speed of about 40km/h. It died on the side of the road and had to be towed home.

As soon as the tow truck dropped it in my driveway, I pulled the connector on the AMM and it ran again. It still hesitated, though...

I dropped in a different fuel system relay-- a little better, but still hesitating on occasion, with occasional surging idle.

I tried a power stage (no change), an idle air valve (no significant change, but it was very clean so I left the replacement in).

I checked all the fuses and the fusebox (no fault found).

I swapped the fuel pressure regulator (no change).

I checked the operation of the transfer pump in the tank by listening with a mechanic's stethoscope-- it worked fine.

I pulled the white label -561 and installed a -951 from a pick-and-pull donor that was marked as "running on arrival". A bit better drivability, but nothing earth-shattering...

I went to test the O2 sensor and inadvertently disconnected it-- I noticed the car ran better immediately-- strange, since it was a 6 month old Bosch replacement unit, carefully crimped with quality connectors and shrink wrapped.

I took measurements on the sensor, and got something weird-- voltages that were intermittently as high as about 1.4V! This was bizarre-- I suspected that my meter needed a new battery-- some cheap VOMs get really inaccurate when the batteries get old. I checked the meter against some reference DC voltages, and it seemed accurate.

I found one reference in the archives (the search works SO much better now!) to an 02 sensor with high outputs. I happened to have a spare Bosch 02 sensor waiting to be installed in my 945, so I put it in the 245. Everything seems fine now...

Anybody else ever see the 113 code along with abnormal 02 sensor voltages?
