Problem with vacuum bleeding brakes 200

Yesterday I started bleeding the brakes with my Mity-Vac but ran into a problem that I think indicates an air leak in the system. Working at the left rear wheel I pumped out 200ml of dirty fluid and a lot of bubbles, and then sucked only air - no fluid, no bubbles, and the fluid level in the master cylinder reservoir did not fall.

The previous owner said that the brakes had been done only a few months ago, but the fluid was the color of molasses and the brake failure light is on unless I pump the brakes a few times.

Am I right in thinking this is a leak? Is it most likely to be in the master cylinder or in the hoses? What is the best way to trace it?

Thanks.
