Extreme cold leads to VERY stiff brake pedal 200

So, it's very cold up here today in New England (4 degF). I just bought a 240 two weeks ago, and found the brake pedal was a bit soft. Today, the pedal was extremely stiff, requiring quite a bit of strength to get the car to stop. Even once the car was warmed up, I still had to really stand on it to get it to stop. Finally, after about 20 minutes of highway driving, I stepped on it and it started to feel normal. A few more pumps of the pedal and it was back to its usual soft feel.

Seeing how cold it is, I'd like to minimize my time on this repair... Any ideas of where to look first?

thanks.
