strut replacement question 200

This might fall into the "too simple to mention" category, but I am struggling with getting everything at the top of my new strut assembly aligned perfectly enough to thread the top of the strut through without colapsing it. I can get the tippy top through, but not the threads. Even with the spring compressors, there is still a bit of pressure, so that I have to pry the spring to get
the bolt to line up--considerable force, little finesse. Any tricks? (I am wearing myself out with the number of attempts!!)
