cat or O2 or something else? 700 1989

Sorry for not getting back to anyone who replied to my previous posts, I haven't had time for the car or the board and when I went to check my threads, they weren't there.

Here's what I've been experiencing, I got a 1989 740 GL from a friend, he told me that every once in a while the car would act up, not rev at all, putter along at low speed, then he'd stop, restart and he'd be OK. I never had the problem until many months later and only once, then months after that, a few times, now, the last time I drove it, it bogged down so badly and finally died on me, several times on the way home the last time I had it out.

The "Check Engine" light is on, it starts hard, AND, in looking into wether or not it's the O2, any diagrams I found show the sensor on the down pipe, mine is on the CAT. What's with that?

I'm not getting responses through my email so if I don't get back to you it's because for some reason I'm not getting them and I haven't checked the board yet.

Thanks for any help. I am not up to wasting any outdoor time, I moved, have no garage and it's been a bit chilly here but we finally got above ZERO today so things are looking up, I hope.
