cat or O2 or something else? 700 1989

Doesn't sound like 02 sensor or cat to me -- more likely, it's electrical (based on it's intermittant nature). I would look very closely at the air intake: the hoses and the Mass Air Flow sensor.

If the check engine light is on, then the Onboard Diagostic system (OBD) has stored at least one code, and you need to retrieve it/them.
