shifter play 700

Not sure if this is normal, or if someone has some ideas on how extensive the fix will be... I have a '90 744Ti manual with 210,000 and the shifter has lots of play (like 3/4 of an inch left to right) in third and fourth gear. Transmission never slips out of gear and I'm getting close to needing a new clutch, but I'd appreciate any ideas on if I should get this taken care of or it's a normal condition that I should stop worrying about.
