16 Valve Engine 700 1990

My understanding is that the newer 16V engine is smoother, more powerful, more efficient, - - - and not nearly as reliable. It is an "interference" engine which means, unlike the red-block 8 valve units, the loss of a timing belt can virtually destroy the engine. That means that you are locked into replacing that belt every 50,000 miles or so. And pray it never fails prematurely. I may be off on that mileage figure but I truly believe that the 16 V engine contradicts what Volvo is all about. Might as well get one of their newer front drive models while you're at it. They are sleek, modern, efficient - - and less trouble free by far. How about their SUV? OK, now I AM talking crazy.

My 740 is my first ever Volvo and I like it even better than my '88 Saab 9000. Which I also liked. But it wasn't as easy to work on as this conventional drive Volvo is going to be. You can't even SEE the alternator on a Saab.
