Problems starting 87 240 in cold weather. 200 1987

I recently purchased an 87 240DL and it’s been running pretty good for the most part, until the temperature dropped the other day.

The car seemed to start ok, perhaps a few extra cranks, but nothing I found unusual. It was pretty cold, below 10F. Once started, the idle was very rough, very unusual. I backed out and started up the road, it was extremely sluggish, like… I literally crawled up the hill, and was afraid I wasn’t going to make it (small rural road, no shoulder). Within about a half mile, perhaps less, the car sort of reved a bit, the idle smoothed out, and it ran fine the rest of the day, There where no substantial periods between starts, and there where no further problems.

This morning, still very cold, I let the car warm up a bit before taking off. Started the same way, maybe a little slow, but not too bad. Idled very rough, sounded like it was going to die several times but never did. After two or three minutes the idle smoothed some but was still rougher than normal. Two or three minutes later the engine sort of reved a bit, like lightly tapping the pedal, and the idle completely smoothed and the car was running as normal. Took off up the road with no problems and it drove fine. The car sat in the lot at work for seven hours, still pretty cold, lower 20’s, and when I started it after work I experienced virtually identical symptoms… until it died. It’s still at work, couldn’t get it restarted. I unplugged the AMM to see if I could get it started in Limp Mode, but it didn’t make a difference. It cranks as expected but never starts. It seems to try to start… to almost start, every third or fourth rotation.

I had some trouble getting the car to pass emissions so I did a bit of work to the ignition and fuel injection systems just last week.

New Parts

Plugs and Wires
Cap and Rotor
Fuel Pressure Regulator
O2 Sensor (#13913)
Air and Oil Filter

In Addition

Cleaned AMM Connector
Cleaned Throttle Body
Cleaned Flame Trap
Changed All Fluids

I have to admit, I’m kind of clueless… anyone have any suspects?

I do have two notes…

For those of you who may remember last week’s discussion, we never did change the fuel filter. We’re afraid we’re going to break something taking it off and I can’t find the parts that I’ll need to repair it in advance. I don’t honestly know what I’m looking for. What are the banjo fittings? Are they a special size… a dealer item? Local parts stores have no idea what I’m taking about and I don’t know what to call them in order to look them up. People also say they break the fuel lines removing the filters, are they just standard fuel lines? Again, local NAPA parts store shows no additional parts associated with the fuel filter. I need a little help here because the fuel filter is one of my suspects, but I can’t figure out what I’m looking for.

Secondly, when I bought the car the guy I bought it from said… There’s a problem with that choke, I ain’t gonna lie to ya. Those are his words. It seemed to run pretty good, and I was pretty sure these cars where fuel injected, so I didn’t really understand the relevance of what he said… until it got cold out.

Thanks in advance,

Dan
