Cracked Heater Hose Turns on Seat Belt Reminder Light 200 1983

Looking for ideas on what caused this. I was curising down the highway after dark at 65 MPH and all at once the seat belt warning light comes on. My seat belt is buckled. A quick glance at the gauges and I see the engine temp is rising. Pulled in to the Quick Trip, shut it down and popped the hood. The left side of the engine and left inner fender are wet with anti-freeze. The belts and radiator hoses are good. Steam is rising from below the throttle position switch; probably from a split in the heater hose. I don't see anything in the owner's manual saying high engine temp turns on the seat belt reminder light. I'm glad it did because it probably saved my engine but I'd like to know why it did. jp
