Hello:

The first thing to check is whether there is still a belt driving the alternator. Next is the integrity of the connections at the back of the alternator. After that, suspect the voltage regulator/brush assembly. This can be replaced without the expense of having to replace the entire alternator, and can be purchased online for a reasonable price.

It's not often that I see someone from New Brunswick on this list-- I grew up there myself. I sure don't miss the winters...
