Grinding/Screeching engine noise 200 1993

Hey folks, it's been a long time since a problem with a 240 has stumped me but this one is a doozy.

Yesterday, I gunned it to pass a lady on her cellphone and something went "clink" and from then on I had the worst sounding grinding/screeching/squeeling noise from under the hood. It sounds like it's coming from the rear of the engine.

Dad picked me up and he used the stethescope to listen all over, couldn't locate the problem.

The noise varies with engine speed and is always there, though it changes irregularly. I removed everything but the timing belt and started the engine - noise still there. I took the valve cover off to see if something was amiss and it looked fine. Turned the engine over with just the starter and noise still there.

It seems to be coming from the rear of the engine. No clue where to start diagnosing this problem as I'm afraid to let the engine run to diagnose the sound for fear of damaging something further.

Any ideas? As much trouble as this '93 has given me in the 14 months I've had it, and getting about 19 mpg lately, I'm about to set the thing on fire and buy back the 300k mile, '82 gl rust bucket I gave to some friends.

Thanks guys.
