What's burning in the steering column? 700 1988

The car is a 1988 740 Turbo wagon with 217k miles. After I signal a right turn by using the lane change feature of the turn signal (so I don't click it to continuous signal, just hold it for a couple seconds), when the stalk returns to center, there's a puff of visible smoke coming from the steering column near where the stalk comes out and I can clearly smell something burning. Has happened 3 times so far (doesn't happen every time). The car has an airbag and cruise control that still works, I've owned it for 3 years/31k miles and haven't repaired anything in that area (no evidence of previous electrical repair or accidents). Seeing as how it's 2 degrees F outside (and about 15 F in my garage), I was hoping to hear some theories while I wait for it to warm up before investigating. Thanks -
