different years color matching 700

I have a '90 740 with a couple of small dents and scratches in the trunk lid. It's gold. There's a gold '88 at the boneyard. They are the same as far as fit, it's the color match that I'm looking for info about.
They won't let me take it out to the car and hold it up to see, so,
first, I'm not sure how/where to read the color plate.
second, how likely is it that it'll be a good match, even if the numbers are right? That is, anyone have experience with how close different batches of paint are, that sort of thing?
