cold starter seems to be a problem 200 1986

Have any of you had issues with volvo starters? well more precisely starter selenoids? For the second morning in a row I have come out to my brick turned the key and all that has happened is the starter spinning without the selonoid kicking the gear out to engage the flywheel. I simply released the key and tried again and both times the car started right up....albeit the starter did sound slightly labored. It has been sub zero F here in pittsburgh for several days now and I thought that the selonoid might have simply gotten a little frost in it and stuck a bit, but I am getting worried. the labored sound of the starter I attribute to the extreme cold on the battery (it is about 15 months old and was replaced with the alternator). Is this a common occurance or should I call up (reluctantly) the shop?....cause it is way way too cold to try climbing under the old girl...could the selonoid not want to engage because the battery is low?
