Two side-view mirror questions. 700 1987

My driver-side power mirror doesn't defrost any longer. What is the usual thing to suspect on these? Is it fixable, or do these heating elements just "go" and end up having to be replaced? How do I access all of this?
Second question; I just went through an automatic carwash (unrelated to the first problem) and the side carwash brush knocked my passenger-side mirror loose - or cracked it - and it is sitting a bit off kilter, but not completely broken off. Everything still works on it though, so I'm not sure if it is an easy fix as well, or do these mirror designs pretty much break and that's that? I thought that they were fold-away mirrors, but now I'm not so sure if they are, or not. The plastic is so brittle on this 20 year old car that I'm afraid to investigate it and damage it further. Does it look like a trip to a salvage yard for some used mirrors, or what???
