Resolved-Stranded what to do? 900

Hi all'
I had posted here an issue where I got stranded as the car won't start. Positioning key to the start did nothing. Thanks to all of great people who poured their advice. For it may help someone I am posting back how it got resolved. Problem started with the change of a donut type washer as I had play in the gear shifter. (940SE turbo, 1991). It drove for two days fine but then this problem happened. Per advice the following was done:
1. Checked and cleaned all the connections to the starter - No luck.
2. Tried to start the car in neutral, by pushing shifter little bit forward, by pulling shifter little bit backward (hoping that the neutral safety switch is the culprit) - no luck.
3. Tap the starter and solenoid with a mallet- no luck.
4. Finally hard part, removed the starter and get it checked...oops GONE.
5.Had used one spare and installed it and the issue was resolved.
Sorry for long post but may be someone can suggest better approach to tackle such an issue.
Thanks
Ram
