Paint Advice 120-130

Hello Craig:

Maybe I can help and share my recent experiences. If you have a national bodyshop chain called Fixauto in Lethbridge, then they might be able to help you out.

First, I had my Amazon-S painted 5 years ago using the Sikkens Autocryl, a base coat then clear coated. I did go to a Sikkens reference web site and they still have the paint formula for VOL79 - Perlweiss. They mix their paints using what they call a "Colormap" and it's 433D3 for your colour, which actually used a grey base. Sikkens also note this colour was used from 1964 until 1967. The actual formula is stated as:

Formula (Autocryl)

Mixing color Amount ( Cumulative )
00 1152.4
559 1155.4
744 1169.5
558 1268.1

Last summer I likewise need some touchup work done and went back to the same paint store in Ottawa. Unfortunately Sikkens does not sell their Autocryl brand any more, but if I had brought in a part, they could find a near match. I had not brought in a part, but he suggested I take a piece into an autobody shop in Cornwall - Fixauto. The experienced painter then got his paint chip kit, with holes in the middle and yes, we did find a match. He custom mixed me a litre, with reducer and I took it to the body shop doing my repair and he was able to spray the 46 red on without any difference to my 5 year old original adjacent bodies. To see the match, look at the VCOA 2007 calendar, March. Can you tell what parts were freshly painted?

To reply to another responder, I once rolled on Tremclad Fire Red on a 1965 122-S, sharing the gallon with a friend who was fixing up a similarly aged Fiat. I can tell you the lines on the Amazon lend themselves to a small paint roller and any overlap marks disappear. Yes, it's a bit "orange peeled" and will fade with sunlight, but for a much younger enthusiast on a tight budget, it did the job. Here's a picture from my web site with my daughter in the driver's seat, taken around 1976!

Not too bad eh? BTW, the Sikkens web site is found at: http://www.sikkenscr.com/sikkens/corporate/, select Color then Mixit Online.
