Re-Setting Tripmeter Is Really Not Good ?? 200

My Odometer & Tripmeter stopped working. I'm sure it is the usual culprit - broken odo gear. I just replaced it about 10x months ago. I do use tripmeter. I re-set it every tank of gas. This is the way that I check how my gasoline mileage/mpg is. I always re-set it standing still. Never while in motion. I read here that re-setting trip meter leads to the odo gear breaking. Is this really so ? Why ? Also I am curious - If i don't re-set it when it reaches 999.9 does it turn over and start at 000.0 or stay at 999.9 ? Thanks.
