oil pan differences 200

I was cleaning out a couple of oil pans today. One was from a 1990 b234 the other a 1993 b230ft. Both are the same shape and dimensions. What was different was the 1990 b234 was made of 2 layers of steel vs 1 for the 1993 b230ft. My guess is the 2 layers was used for increased leak resistance due to damage. Anyone see this before or know the reason why they changed
