The time has come for my ’87 240 to be restored.
I have scoured the net for as much 240 restoration info as I could find, but I have not been able to find as much detailed resto info as for a number of other older vehicles.
So, if anyone has found any site that focuses on complete vehicle restoration (no engine rebuild), I would very much appreciated if you could post the sites.
I purchased this vehicle new in 87 and took fairly good care of it. I have only driven it in about half a dozen winters. Unfortunately, rust is starting to find its way. Performing a restoration on this vehicle at this time should not require major bodywork.
Any restoration advise as to how to proceed, points of concern, dos and don’ts, etc would be appreciated. I have done some restoration work on other vehicles and have some experience, the appropriate tool and facility, so I will be performing all the work with the exception of the final paint application.
So far I have removed the front end: grill, lights, bumper, radiator, condenser, fan, alternator, air intake box, and right fender (fender had a dent).
I intend to remove the engine and the cab interior to allow for a good paint job.
Should I be removing the outer fenders and hood to allow for separate painting?
Not sure how to deal with the black tape below the windows on the doors and the black window frames trim.
Some of the problem areas requiring attention:
Engine bay Wire Harness Insulation failure.
Cracked Windshield.
Dented right fender (have replacement fender).
Yellowing head light lens.
Turn signal plastic spidered and pieced breaking off.
Rear brake light lenses with spider cracks, but intact.
Minimal rust near rocker panels.
