Stumbling & Stalling after WOT 140-160 1970

I was able to open 'er up a little this week since pulling the plug off of the vent tube.
It seemed to do much better, then I romped on it going up a hill and it died again.
I was able to coast it down into a service station parking lot and couldnt get it to start again untill I put a couple of gallons of gas from the emergency tank in. In total it took in about 10 gallons. I cant remember what the fuel tank capaccity is, but that seems like it was pretty low. (the fuel guage doesnt work, which is why Im trying to figure this out).

So at this point, Im not sure if pulling the plug off the vent tube solved all of the problems and I just ran out of gas, or if the problem is still there.
Nevertheless, I think the next step is to replace the fuel pump. At the very least that origional one has got to be showing its age by now, and the new one is taking up valuable garrage space.

Cheers,
Dave.
