tach fluctuates at higher speeds 700 1986

I have had a 760 GLE in the family for years, but due to a problem with the tach, it has not been driven (much) in the past couple of years. At any speed above 80 mph, the tach fluctuates between about 2 and 4 thousand RPM's. The car seems to be driving fine, and there are no strange noises, but everyone in the family is terrified to take this thing on a long trip... Any ideas on what this could be???
