Hi revving on the freeway with 4 speed manual 200 1980

I just got my recently purchased 1980 A to B volvo 244 running.A good fuel distributor unit did the trick. It runs fantastic but that 4 speed manual has got to go.My speedometer/odometer works 10% of the time.I gotta fix that. But my main concern is the engine revving high with that torquey engine and low final drive ratio. Is it recommended to swap out this transmission to the 4 speed with OD?My 66 p1800 had the electric overdrive 5th gear.Or can the rear end be modified to a taller ratio.I don't want to spend a fortune but the high revving is annoying.I had a 1988 mercury tracer that with automtic that revved at 3500 rpm at 60 mph. This volvo seems like it is revving even higher but i don't really know without a tachometer.Any words of wisdom would sure be apreciated.
