Fuel Pump Relay-HELP

The 84-88 cars won't prime the pumps. LH 2.2 works a bit differently than the later LH 2.4. Both my 90's do prime the pumps.

You could have a failure (possibly intermittent) in the in-tank pump, despite it being new. You could have a crappy ground connection for the pump in the left rear fender well/cargo floor area. Check that.

It's also possible, in fact likely, with any of these pre-89 cars, that the distributor connector for the hall sensor could be failing. This is right on the bottom of the dist, not the coil wire connector to the cap but next to that, the 3-pin plug for the hall sensor.

The simple fix is a new (or good used) dist. Unfortunately new ones are about $300. I had to replace one about 5 years ago on our 88 740GLE. Same symptoms except for fuel pump noise.

Intermittent power loss and finally stalling that got worse and worse. I replaced it on the side of the road in the rain when the day finally came that it wouldn't stay running.

It never had another miss in the time we owned it.

Good luck with the car.
