Hey I'm on your side, I have 1x 142, 2x 144's & 3x 164's. I also have a '83 240, the only thing I like about it is the 4-speed auto. Nearly every thing about it is a disappointment compared to the older pushrod powered cars.

How do you arrive at a 140 being the same size or bigger than a 240?

Like SRC said. The '73 & '74 140's are the same size as the 240 on the inside & the earlier models give noticeable more leg room in the front.

240's are fairly average cars when you are use to the early 140's. Not only are they bigger in all the wrong places, they managed to build a 'more modern' OHC engine with aluminium cross flow head that is both heavier & less powerful. The strut front end is a bit average too & the rear suspension mods are a bit of a disaster.
