82 gl charcoal canister question. 200

Ok while tracing vac lines today I followed the lines coming out of the back of throttle body and realized that my car has what I would guess is a charcoal canister, it's right in front of the drivers side tire behind the bumper. I have three questions, first question should I replace those vac lines? Second question is, does this canister need servicing at all or can it even be serviced? Third question is what the heck does it do in the first place and what does it have to do with the throttle body? She's going into the shop for a throttle body cleaning on thursday so hopefully it cures my idle problem that nothing has fixed, if not its back to the drawing board. Any info would be great, thanks everyone.
