960 cutoff while cruising - non start condition 900 1993

I haven’t really driven my ’93 960 much since doing the cylinder head job, mainly due to the plastic section of the radiator developing a crack and lets out most of the anti-freeze when engine gets hot. I have also been noticing that on cold days, the car won’t even turn over when I turn the key. I’ll have to sit there and work the tranny shifter back and forth and if I am lucky, after a while it will crank and fire up. When it is doing the no crank situation, the arrow is usually flashing on the dash and the lights at the gear shifter are jumping back and forth. I also noticed that when I turn the key to Ignition On (red lights across dash), all the lights are on except the “check engine” light. Once this light is not present when key is at ignition On, you can twist the key all you want and the starter won’t even respond. I confirmed that as soon as you turn ignition On and see the “Check Engine” light up with the rest, turn the key one notch further (Start position) and car will fire up right away. My research of the group’s archives points to the PNP switch needing replacing, but I may be wrong?

I bought a replacement radiator last weekend and swapped out the cracked radiator. I also have a PNP switch but I ran out of daylight and didn’t have time to install it. I let the car idle for a while, let the fan come on about 3 times, checked for leaks and everything was fine. I took the car for a test drive. There was no warning or flashing lights on the dash and the engine was running perfectly. I drove for about 25 miles on the freeway, and on our way back, that transmission arrow light suddenly appeared on the dash. I noticed that the car was not responding to me pressing the throttle. It soon became apparent that the engine had cutoff as the red and yellow lights lined up across the dash. I coasted along and took the next exit. I found a safe place and coasted over and parked. I turned the key off and when I turned it back on, the arrow was flashing on the dash and gear lever area, and the “Check Engine” light was not among the lights that were on. Sure enough, I tried to start and there is no starter action. I shifted the gear lever back and forth many times and kept trying the key, but the starter never stirred. A tow truck soon pulled up behind me and offered to tow the car home. I was like 7 miles from home (within Houston city limits) and the tow truck stuck it to me for $134. As soon as we got home, set the car down and tried the key, the car fired right up! Tow truck driver only takes cash! Suffice this to say that my confidence on the reliability of my 960 declined sharply.

Does anyone know what it is that caused the car to leave me stranded without warning, and then crank back up after about 15 minutes? I thought that the PNP switch only comes into play when you are trying to start the car, and after engine starts and is running; you are fine until you need to start the car again? I really need all y’alls help in figuring out what’s wrong with this car, as I am stumped.
