Hi everybody!Like I told you in my introduction post
http://www.brickboard.com/RWD/index.htm?id=1152263
I am improving my Amazon with some sporty goodies.I bought from a finnish guy living in Spain a ported headcam ,shaved off 4mm and equipped with big valves(40-42 mm?),different springs etc.I bought him too a Kent Cams camshaft equivalent to a K cam (this is what I was thinking...) and a Scandix 2 inch exhaust system.
My mechanic install all the bits and after putting some metal pieces to raise the valve rockers and a some tuning the car runned well and earn a lot of power...but only from 2500-3000 rpm.Now the car is street undriveable, you have to keep the foot at the accelerator pedal waiting for the green light praying the engine doesn´t stop , it´s difficult even to start in a uphill. After reading a british magazine about Amazon tuning I found I have to put some new SU needles, I think from a Triumph TR.The guy who sold me the bits confirmed that and advised me to go to a british sports cars shop to fine tuning the carbs, but after I exposed some doubts about the exact camshaft he send me, he recognised it´s not a K but a R ! I read this is a camshaft for street & race use, no very suitable for low rpms.I always read the K is the better for a good street use,so I have the wrong cam.
Maybe this is gonna sound a bit ridiculous( I hope funny) but I want to drive a lowered old rusty volvo who eats modern cars at the city ,fast in a traffic light start ,capable to run well in my daily traffic jam surrounded by Cayennes,M3 and Imprezas and a good driver (not necessarely a racer ) at the highway .
I live in a radar controlled european medium town with small streets full of traffic lights and stop signs, I don´t want an asthmatic car at the start but very fast after some hundred meters.I´m not going to rally or drag race the car, I want to pass the guy in the Cayenne.
I confess I don´t have a big knowledge about mechanicals so I stand on this finnish guy.He knew what kind of driving I wanted but sold me the wrong camshaft, I think accidentally but wrong, so I ask for your advice,guys..
I spend a lot of money and don´t want to spend much more ,so thats my question.Do you think is possible to keep the R camshaft and after changing the SU needles and fine tuning will I have a driveable traffic light-to-traffic light “fast” car,or at least driveable, without having to high revving all the time?
Please ,read this first option carefully because Option 2 can force me selling the car to recover some money (my wife rules...)
Option 2:Changing needles and tuning the carbs but changing the cam to a K or even a D? I know putting a D is maybe a step backward but my car was very slow before and now has a new headcam,4-2-1 manifold, Scandix exhaust, rebuilt SUs waiting for KN filters etc so the gain for me is enough even with the D cam.My doubt here is about the headcam, maybe is too shaved or radical to use it with a milder cam?
Of course I can try first to keep the R cam and tuning the SUs but if that doesnt work and I have to change to a milder cam ,maybe I´ll have to tune up the carbs again with the new K or D cam and pay twice to the carb guy? I have to buy new rims...
Thanks for your help!
