B20 head gasket change

I know this isn't a boat forum, but i hope somebody can give some insight. I'm in need of reinstalling the b18 head on my b20 block. It was set up this way from Volvo Penta. I had the head in the machine shop to install hardened seats,& valve job.
The problem I have is on the alignment of the gasket and the head with out dowel pins. I've r&r'd a few heads in my life, but have never seen an install w/o any alignment means.(pins or collets) The head bolts are too small to align the gasket. The diameter of the hole in the gasket and head are too large and will allow a lateral movement of both at about 1/8 of an inch with the bolts in place. The manual i have for the V/P aq130c states that the dowel pins align the gasket and head(not present on my engine and I'm the first to pull the head unless work was done to it under warranty in 1975)
Can someone please help, boating season is almost here, and I've got to get it back together. TIA
