Check engine light turns on during highway crusing 200

There are 'soft' codes and 'hard' codes, depending on what is wrong. Only 'hard' codes set a persistent light. A loose gas cap that won't let the carbon canister regenerate, for example is a 'soft' code, while a bad signal from an oxygen sensor or MAF sensor is a 'hard' code.

My daughter's '91 was setting a 'hard' code during the commute. It drove me crazy for weeks until I determined that the connection to the oxygen sensor heater was intermittent. I never found the loose connection. I had to run a new wire from the fuse to the heater wire to correct the problem.
