battery idiot light

So here's the deal... I just changed my oil and my idiot battery was on (real real dim) when it was dark in the garage, but as soon as I brought it out into the light of dusk I couldn't see it anymore it was so dim. I tested the amperage across the alternator and battery and both seem to be fine, but the ampmeter on the car is reading way down in the red.. any ideas on what could be causing this little gremlin. I have a 700 mile drive tomorrow and would rather my car not die in the middle of vermont... As always, thanks for all the help
