Old Style Emblems 120-130

The first 122 series Volvo I ever saw belonged to a renowned anthropologist at my alma mater. It was nice little white P220 wagon that impressed me and helped spark my addiction to Volvo cars. Despite the fact that I got my first degree in anthropology, sadly he never taught any courses that I could take so I never got to know him and learn about his very cool-looking volvo. Some 15 years later, I finally got my own 122 - but that's another story. Still, I never forgot that first amazon.

From my post-graduate research, I've determined that his car was likely an early/mid-60s P220 and I recall that it had some sort of volvo emblem on the back of the tailgate. I think it was the diagonal "Volvo" script often seen on the sport model 544s. Despite a lot of searching, I've never seen a shot of another wagon volvo with that sort of script on it.

When I look at the rear of my own p220, I always feel like there is something missing from the tailgate. When people walking by, stop and squint at the rear of my amazon, trying to figure out what sort of car it is, they rarely notice the tiny Volvo emblem in the license plate holder and never know what to make of the small side badges.

So... I've been hunting for a tailgate badge for some time and finally picked up one of the old style grill/fender badges (see pic)

Aside from the back pins being gone, it is really in very nice condition. I'd like to mount it on the tailgate, but I'm not sure it's appropriate. It's also a gold emblem, while my trim is the silver/stainless variety. I've got a set of gold VOLVO letters for the nose, but I think it would still look wrong.

I was thinking of striping the gold off, polishing and repainting the letters and numbers and putting it on my tailgate. However, doing so might "ruin" a perfectly nice looking gold emblem. I've never seem a silver version of this emblem and I've never run across the "volvo sport" script.

SO... (finally the question) would converting this emblem be a waste of a perfectly good emblem? Would it look really incorrect to have such an emblem on a 220 at all? If it would be proper and not wasteful How should I go about mounting this on my tailgate? What position and orientation would be most "correct" for a tailgate emblem?

Alternately, I also have a nice V-O-L-V-O emblem from a 140-series, but I thought it might look too "modern" for my Amazon.

Thanks for any advice (and reading my rambling reminiscences)
